UNUSUAL VENUE
Zappeion Megaron - Conference and Exhibition Hall, AthensF
The Zappeion Megaron was erected in 1874 – 1888 and was designed by the architect Theophil Hansen. It hosted the first Olympic Games which took place in Athens in 1896. The Zappeion Megaron has witnessed important moments in Greece's political history, for example, the Treaty of Accession, by which Greece became a full member of the European Community, was signed on its premises on May 29, 1979.
Located in the historic centre of Athens, within walking distance of the Acropolis and the marble Panathenaic Stadium of the 1896 Olympic Games, the Zappeion Megaron normally serves as an international exhibition hall and houses exhibitions of paintings and sculpture, musical performances and other cultural events while the over 200,000 sq. m. of gardens with meandering paths, fountains and over 70 neoclassical sculptures serve as a pleasant and peaceful “break-out” area. The building and gardens have recently been extensively renovated and the Zappeion Exhibition Hall has became a member of the Historic Conference Centres of Europe. The Zappeion Conference and Exhibition Hall has approximately 4,000 sq. m. of space suitable for exhibitions and conferences, and a central atrium of 984 sq. m. that can be used for conferences, concerts, cocktail parties and sit-down dinners. There are two interior open courtyards of 957 sq. m. each of which are utilized as service areas. The venue provides modern interpreting facilities and communications technology together with support services.
